Quiet Mornings and Quail

Mornings and sunsets are the desert at it`s best. The quail visit twice a day for a drink of cool water. I fill the containers about 6 a:m and 5 p:m  Coyotes drop in about mid morning. I`m going to cut that low branch on the Joshua. The weight is too much for the tree. That`s the Grand Wash Cliffs in the background. I like the haze. Usually by noon huge storm cells float behind them. It`s quite a sight. And now I present my quail friends.

The quail are below the Joshua Tree branches. The rabbits fled when they saw me coming. The round tub has gold bearing dirt I haven`t run yet. That tarp weighs about two hundred pounds. That`s why it`s still there. I`m going grab another cup of tea and sit outside while it`s quiet and cool.

My best friend of 25 years is near death. Her name is Sue. She has stage four lung cancer.  Our sons were born the same year, same day.  Her son was best man at my son`s wedding.  They are still the closest of friends. Shortly after my husband passed Sue told my son who would have thought he would lose his father and her son would lose his mother in the same year. Wow!  Sue is the friend you could confide in and trust. We both love our tea. I will think of her with each sip.

  1. Hi Cathy! Big hugs, and so very sorry for your oncoming loss. Lung cancer is not easy (not that anything is). My SIL passed away on the 20th of December from the same thing 15 months following diagnosis...it progressed into bone cancer as well. Her name was Cathy, and she was only 51, she would have been 52 last week. My BIL also has lung cancer. It is very tough on my sister, but they are hanging on to each other as best as they can. You live in such beautiful surroundings. Thank you for sharing! Isn't it amazing how beauty and ugliness can live side by side?!

  2. A good family friend recently passed away with complications from lung cancer. Started there, then turned into brain cancer. She was so full of life and she will be sorely missed. Lots of hugs and prayers for you and your friends. Love the quail I haven't seen any for years. My mom used to raise quail when I was younger, used to love to "chat with them".

  3. Desert evenings and mornings are wonderful. Love the quail and the old Joshua trees. So sorry about your dear friend, God bless her and her family as I know how hard it is. My dad died from it and he was just 59. I still miss him and its been years ago when he passed in 1977.

  5. Cathy this hurts my heart both for Sue and her family but also for you. It seems the losses just keep on coming...I suppose that's part of life but you've had too many in too short a time. I've lifted you up this morning asking for God to give you strength. blessings, marlene

  6. Like your other friends here, I am so sad to hear of your friend's impending passing. One of my husband's uncles has lung cancer, and Ken phoned his wife tonight for the first time in a few months, to see how he is, and was told that Uncle K. is now in hospital and the outcome is not real good. Mind you he is 90-something, so he has had a good life, but such an unpleasant ending.
I got your photo closeup to see the quail - we have Chinese Quail in our aviaries, not quite the same as your desert Quail it seems.

  7. I smiled because who else would think to leave water out for coyotes, Cathy? Your locale looks so exotic to me even though I am slowly getting accustomed to western views.

I'm so sorry to hear about your friend! I hope she is on hospice and her passing will be peaceful.

You already know I love your handmade creations thta are in your next post ;)
