A neighbor made this crib quilt about 70 years ago for her child. Her husband told me he rocked his babies to sleep in that quilt. The memories brought tears to his eyes. I am very fortunate to be the owner of this quilt. Look close at the elephants leg and you will see a tiny signature, "Minnie". I love it! The quilt is all hand stitched.
I don`t usually show recipes on my blog. The exception is this "Dutch Apple Tart" recipe from the Pennsylvania Dutch People`s Cookbook put out by Culinary Art`s Press , Reading PA in 1978. This is a delicious treat.
You will need:
Pastry for a one crust pie
1 Tablespoon Flour
1 Cup Sugar
5 Medium Size Apples, quartered, cored and pared
1/4 Teaspoon Ground Nutmeg
2 Tablespoons Butter
I also added a teaspoon of Ground Cinnamon, my idea 'cause I like cinnamon in my pies and cinnamon is good for too!
Line an 8 inch round baking dish or pie plate with pastry. Sprinkle a mixture of the flour and 1/4 cup of the sugar on the bottom of the pastry. Add the apples with cut sides down. Sprinkle the layers with a mix of the remaining sugar and nutmeg. Cinnamon too if you want. Dot with the butter. Bake at 350 degrees F about 55 minutes or until the apples are tender and a rich syrup has formed.
We like eating the tart warm with real whipped cream. OK, I use Reddi-Whip, not whipping cream.
I`m getting another mammogram tomorrow, Monday and I wanted to post this now cause I`ll be real busy tomorrow morning. Good ol` calcium deposits!
