A Thrifted Quilt

Hello everyone! Thank you for visiting!

My topic today is a thrifted quilt. The first place I go in a thrift store is the quilt and blanket racks. I almost always find a nice little homemade, used quilt. I hang them for display but most often toss them across a table or a chair. These little quilts are my favorite chair cover. The one in the picture below is 40 inches wide and 60 inches long. Easy to wash 100 percent cotton. It is not a "perfect" quilt. Not every stitch is precise and there is one small stain. What matters to me is the heart that designed and sewed this cutie. No matter. I shop this way for aprons too. Homemade with a history.

Thrifted Quilt 3/2012

The last picture is our home and the wildflowers growing against the rock wall that lines our driveway. My son built the wall when he was a teenager. There`s at least 1,000 rocks in that project. The bright green bush is Creosote, the yellow flowers are desert marigolds. Not much of a variety of flowers this year. Our hard to see house is surrounded by Joshua trees. They make nice shade. I`d like to add a room but that would mean cutting a tree or two. Not going to do it.

Home Sweet Home. Creosote Bush and Desert Marigolds.

Rain and wind today. I am happy with the cooler temperatures. I hope the snow is finished on the east coast so you folks can warm up. Take care.

Vintage Pinwheel Quilt

I found this delightful pinwheel quilt tossed in the bottom of a closet. We sometimes clean up property for folks whose relatives have died and they can`t get here to do it themselves. Most times we are allowed to keep what we want and that`s how I came across this quilt. It was by itself in a trash bag at the bottom of a closet.

Most of the fabric is from the 1950`s. I recognized familiar prints of shirts and blouses. There is a lot of wear at one end. Likely from hands pulling on it. I`m going to sew a cover to protect the fabric so I can use it and not worry about damage.

Hot and humid here. Temps are high 90`s. Not bad for August in the desert. Lots of quail, other birds and small animals visit several times a day for water. I don`t run the coyotes off. They need water like every other creature out here. I do hustle the rattlesnakes out of the yard. King snakes, gopher snakes, anything that is not a pit viper gets to stay. There was a scorpion in the bathroom two weeks ago. Hubby took care of him.

That`s about all. Hope you are all well.

Vintage Crib Quilt No. 2

Hello everyone! I bought this crib quilt at the same garage sale I picked up the Red Work Quilt in yesterdays post. I know it was hard for this fellow to part with the quilt. I`m sure there is a name to the pattern, but I don`t know what it is. You can see the fabric is very thin in some places and faded. It looks like most of the material is recycled shirts and dresses. Hand quilted with love. I rolled it up and put it in my linen closet till today. The value to me is I know the family and the history of the quilt. Sometimes I think I am just too sentimental.

Can you imagine the stories my quaint little quilts could tell?

If you have some time I think you might enjoy a visit to my friend Nancy`s Blog. She has extremely beautiful posts about using vintage embroidery to enhance our wardrobe`s. Well worth a visit!

Thank you for visiting. It`s been a pleasure!
