Irish Carrickmacross Lace

Vintage Carrickmacross Lace

This is an example of  Carrickmacross Lace.  It is one end of a table scarf. The fabric is muslin hand stitched on  net. Fragile, as you can see by holes in the net. I carefully hand washed it. Soaking, squishing suds through, rinsing and laying flat to dry on a towel. I would like to find a way to display it. Please click on the pictures to enlarge them. The link above goes to The Lace Fairy, in my estimation the best lace site on the web.

Pet Peeve Of The Week.

A 72" x 90" polyester tablecloth  is not vintage! That`s a modern size.  I collect army navy tablecloths.  Mine were made in Hong Kong in the early 1950`s or earlier and the lace is not scratchy. Ebay and  Etsy are awash with Walmart doilies offered as vintage. That quilt in the thrift store sewn with long, long stitches is not vintage. It is a mass produced Asian  product. Ebay is a minefield of misinformed sellers today.  I got caught once. The pictures weren`t all that great. Seller had good feedback. My item arrived with a China tag. I screwed up. Yep! Check out Ebays Vintage Linens Board. Lots of educated women there. By now we all know to be cautious before we buy.  I am old school. Vintage by my standards is 50 years old. Antique, 100 years. I know the standards are changing. I`m just not changing with them.

Till later,
Cathy

  1. Amen to the 100 yr. rule. Didn't realize that lace is never "scratchy"...:o)

  2. Hi Nancy,

Lace is scratchy. The stuff I was talking about was horrible. Stiff and crunchy.
