It`s My Blog Hop Day!

Good Morning from the Arizona High Desert! Today it`s my turn to share my blocks as a participant in the Red, White, Blue Blog Hop. I haven`t sewn for years, so here we go! Both blocks are Wonky Stars.

The stripes are a nice cotton. The gingham not so much. I prefer  vintage gingham from the 50`s and 60`s.

More of the red and white cotton and a nice floral print. Fabrics are from my stash except the center square was cut from a purloined (stolen) shirt from the husband. We live in a very remote area and I make do with what`s on hand. Maybe someday he`ll miss that shirt, but I doubt it! I missed the best natural light when I took this pic.

Thank you Jane`s Fabrics for hosting the Hop and Madame Samm for sponsoring this nice experience.

Please visit these other participants for more lovely blocks.

  36. I really like your make-do attitude! It is so much more Centsible and frugal to quilt this way! I should take lessons from you!! I have lots of old shirts that could be used up...shame on me for not thinking of it. I can't imagine living in the desert...have you always lived in your remote area?? I like learning about people in different areas of the country especially other quilters.

    1. Hi!

Thank you for the nice comment. We`ve lived in the desert about 22 years. Wanted to get my son out of Las Vegas and bought acreage here. He was about 8. We built our home when we had money to build it, a room at a time. Our neighbors didn`t know what to make of us. Living 60 miles one way from the nearest grocery store, banking, doctor etc
we learned how to use our time wisely but sometimes we still screw up. Ha! We loved living in Colorado and Utah.

I have a Cherokee friend who taught me to be thrifty with fabric. She`s a fabulous quilter and told me to shop the thrifts and yard sales for shirts and blouses or whatever made with quality US cotton. I find my best barkcloth and vintage quilts that way too. When she makes a custom quilt, she has connections with a wholesaler and gets great deals on fabric. Otherwise it`s thrift shopping for her. Sometimes we barter for fabric.

      Thank you Gramma Jane.

  43. Checks and stripes are really hard to work with. Your blocks look great. I too have bought fabric at thrift stores. Must look at the clothes with new eyes-100% cotton, ok.

  44. Oh - love your block (and the photo at the top of the page). Your quilt block I think is made in the true spirit of quilting! There is something especially beautiful of making art out of what is already on hand. Great job!

  50. Great job on your blocks! Stars are my favorite. I grew up in Alaska, in the country and loved it. Sounds like you have a great place where you are. I think it's very clever of you to use what you have. Creative folks can look at things and see a dual purpose. Isn't that what they did hundreds of years ago? hehe.Again, super job and thanks for sharing them wih us.
